The earliest known member of the Sanchez family, is Zacarias Sanchez, who was born
about 1860, according to his death record1. The Sanchez
family belonged to the Mestizo-Sangley (Chinese-Mestizo) community of Mandaue, placing
them among its leading families.
About 1878, Zacarias married Basilia Cortes who was born about
18581. During spanish rule, Zacarias served as Cabeza de Barangay
(Barrio Captain)5. Little else
is known of Zacarias until the mid-1920's. In 1926, Zacarias along with his grandson,
Hilario Cabahug, went to Labinay, Ozamiz City, on the southern island of Mindinao. From there
they proceeded to Aurora, Zambouanga del Sur16. Aurora
was a newly pioneered municipality in the rural mountainous area, which attracted many settlers
from Mandaue. Presumably, Zacarias accompanied Hilario to assess opportunities for
settlement in Aurora. Hilario's father, Ambrosio, followed in 1927 and among with other
family members, settled their16.
According to the civil Registery, Zacarias Sanchez died on June 8,
19261, in Mandaue,
Cebu. This would suggest that Zacarias returned from Aurora shortly before his
death. His wife, Basilia died in Mandaue on May 5, 19361.
