The Family of Buenaventurada Seno
of Mandaue, Cebu, Philippines
Buenaventurada Seno was born about 18843, the
daughter of Gabriel Seno and Isabel del Castillo.
Insight into her early life comes from a 1909 Cebu City newspaper. The paper reported
that Doña Buenaventura Seno was a prominent woman of Mandawe
involved in the local fiesta there4.
This suggests that the family was part of the principales, the elite in the
community, consistent with the families Chinese-mestizo origins.
On February 16, 19173,
Buenaventurada married Paulino Cuizon, son of Tomas Cuizon and
Juliana Euson and
they had five children. Family members, however, relate that Buenaventurada had four
additional children prior to her marriage. One of these, Praxedes, who was born around
the
time of their marriage, continued to use the Seno name3, even
though Paulino may have been her father.
